Committee Meeting NO 3
Written by Geoff Cooney
Wednesday, 15 April 2009 22:41

Another full meeting last night with a lot of material covered.  The meeting opened with looking over the minutes of the previous meeting and discussing a few items that came up.  Each of the Officers gave a brief report on current items.  Some of the items discussed referred to 'membership pathways' into the club and how we could better streamline access to the club.  Various points were raised and better use of the web site was mooted. The use of video clips and photos on the web site was suggested also both in terms of showing visitors what we do and also for training purposes.

A revamp of the web site was discussed as well as other PR projects including a newsletter were also put forward.  A social trip to Tullamore is being looked at, as is a visit to an Archery competition, fact finding missions!

The main point of the meeting was to look at how we can develop our coaching and training potential.  As a precursor to this topic we looked at opening times for the club which would be available to show potential new members around.  It was felt that the range would be open each night for this, except Monday's, which would be reserved for members training. Members would have access to the range at all other times also.  Non members wishing to visit the range to see what we do out side of these times will be able to do so but only by prior arrangement.

The second part of the discussion on training focused on the further development of our new Instructors. The need to get our Instructors up to speed quickly with developing training sessions and looking at developing a training course was stressed and all present were asked to commence, with all haste, this task.

In keeping with our desire to end all meetings at 9.30pm. We accepted that items will need to be revisited later but that progress was being made.  Social activities and fundraising are the main topics for our next meeting which will be held in two weeks time.

Mark has informed us that activity on our web site has increased considerably, so thank you all for visiting, please come back

and keep your ideas coming in.

Best of luck to our shooters in the upcoming matches including the Nationals, we wish you all well!

Committee Meeting tonight No 3
Written by Geoff Cooney
Tuesday, 14 April 2009 12:22

Our 3rd committee meeting is set for tonight at 8.00pm. in Wilkinstown.  Two items of news first :  UCD are hosting a pre Nationals airgun event this Sunday in UCD, those of our members wishing to take part please book in with UCD.  Also the Airgun Championships are upon us again, our members wishing to compete please put the final touches to your training and prepare to make your booking.

In tonight's meeting, following the up date reports from the club's officers, (each lasting no more than 120 sec).  We will revise and discuss items that have been carried over from the last meeting referring to our facilities and the development of same.

The main focus of tonight's meeting will be to discuss  aspects of coaching and training in order to establish a consensus as to what our club's goals should be in this important area for the coming year and beyond.

I would like to see  policy decisions on number of particular items germain to tonight's topic, vis. Daily opening times for the club established and published.  A commitment from the members to volunteer to act as Range Officers during the opening times.  And a committment from our new Instructors to commence the development of their individual training plans and to make themselves available as leaders for training and coaching sessions.

In this area we should also include consideration for the continued and extended training of our new Instructors.

As always if you have ideas, comments and recommendations, please make them know to us.

I am confident that our theme for this year 'Activity and Visability' will very soon start to become apparent.

Keep in touch!

Coaching Tip - Goal Setting
Written by Geoff Cooney
Wednesday, 08 April 2009 09:01

A goal is something you want to achieve!

In a sporting context it is most likely an improvement in performance.  'I want to win the Nationals next year!'  In order to win the Nationals next year, the winning score will have to be estimated.  A score of 580 could be in the running.  I am currently hitting 540, so I need to up my game by 40 points to be in with a chance.  In the above process we have set the goal of 580 and we have looked at our starting point of 540, we now have to ask is our goal of 580 realistic and attainable?

Two more factors come into play at this stage, commitment and time.  Do I have the drive within me to to achieve this goal and also do I have the time to put into a consistent training routine?  The answer to these questions will determine if the score of 580 as a goal is realistic.  If our motivational levels are high and time is available, the next step is to identity areas of strength in our current performance.  Becoming aware of our strengths is very important because these are the areas which we will focus our training energies.  So doing, will reinforce good habits and build up our confidence.

Let's recap, We have set our goal, we have decided that it is 'do-able', we have the motivation and the time to work at it and we have identified our strengths.  The next step is to plan our training time table so that we have a gradual build up towards our goal.  Break down your performance into repetitions ( 1 match = 60 shots) and break down each repetition into it's component elements (loading, lifting, aiming etc.) and set out to equally rehearse each component of the repetition until you have improved all aspects of the repetition to an acceptable level.

Then take a look at how each of the repetitions fits into the overall competition structure and, you have guessed it!,  break down the competition structure into it's component elements and rehearse each of these elements equally until all aspects have reached an acceptable level.  Keep a track of progress and set performance markers along the way to ensure that your efforts are producing the desired results, at the right time.

So Goal setting is most important - set the goal, make sure it is realistic and attainable, break the path, from current level of performance to your new desired level of performance, down into a number of simple steps and start with step one!  So guys and girls, get your note book out and start planning.  An hour planning today can produce life changing results next year!  Set your goals, commit to them and get out there and do something about achieving them!
